Newport Beach - May 2016
A great time was had by all who attended the UWRA gathering in beautiful Newport Beach CA!
Santa Fe Fun - May 2015!
Twenty UW retirees, alumni, spouses and guests enjoyed a great time together in Santa Fe May 7th to 10th.
Margaret Wood gave a delightful talk about her five-year stay, when she was in her 20’s, as companion and caretaker to then eighty plus year-old Georgia O'Keeffe.
Then the group, including 10 United Way staff members, was off for a wonderful dinner at Mucho Gusto, a tucked away quant Mexican restaurant. Other activities included a visit to the Ghost Ranch (where O’Keeffe lived and painted many of her best known landscapes), and the opportunity to dine as a group at local Santa Fe favorites. Each day was free to make your own plans, some included rooftop pizza/craft beer luncheons on the Santa Fe square, visit to other parts of the city, tea/pastries in a marvelous bakery, museums, galleries, checking out the Santa Fe cooking school, shopping, hiking and bird watching, and driving desert and mountain roads and experiencing multiple weather events in the course of a few minutes (e.g., sunshine, rain, snow, and sleet).
Our first UWRA event. We loved it. Thanks to you (Tricia), Alice, and the others who put the gathering together. Wish I had taken more photos of our group activities, but I was too busy having fun. All the best, Glenn
We arrived home last night and are still basking in the memories of our trip to Santa Fe. We really enjoyed the entire trip and all the caring details that were infused to make it even more meaningful. Pat
Hi All Lucky SF Attendees, Santa Fe was the best! Great friends, yummy food, wonderful art, fabulous tour of Ghost Ranch, and the El Rey captured the feel of old Santa Fe. That's how a gathering should be done. Would love to do it again. Merritt and Jeanne
UWRA has established a tradition of sponsoring an annual get-together at Wildacres. Wildacres Retreat, owned and operated by the Blumenthal Foundation of Charlotte, NC, is a conference center offering its facilities to non-profit groups conducting educational or cultural programs on topics such as music, art, politics, science, religion, lapidary, craft and writing. At an elevation of 3,300 feet, Wildacres is situated on 1,600 acres atop Pompey's Knob, a mountain near the Blue Ridge Parkway in Little Switzerland, NC about one hour from Asheville, NC.
The Wildacres gathering (open to all UWRA members) includes accommodations for three nights, eight family style meals, a planned program, and pre and post dinner get-togethers providing the opportunity to come together with friends and colleagues in a beautiful rustic setting.
Over the years UWRA has sponsored other member gatherings at various locations. For instance in 2013 UW retirees, alumni, spouses and guests enjoyed a great time together at the TI (Treasure Island) Resort in Las Vegas; and with attendees from across the country, Vermont to Washington State, Mississippi to California, Arizona, Nevada, Oklahoma and Florida there was a diverse representation of United Way experience. And in 2012 the Pala Mesa Resort, an oasis in Fallbrook, California (San Diego County) provided the perfect setting for a gathering. Set between the ocean, the desert and the wine country and with an agenda filled with plenty of refreshments, delicious meals, fun activities, and informative programs to fill the days and evenings a good time was had by all. In 2011 a group came together in May at South Lake Tahoe to renew old friendships and make new ones, enjoy the beauty of the area, and cope with a late snow storm!
