Retirement Planning Webinar #4

Don't Let the Future Surprise You!

April 7, 2014

The Webinar featured Jeri Sedlar who co-authored with husband Rick Miners the book Don't Retire, REWIRE! As they state on their website (, Rewiring® is “the missing link” between financial planning and successful living, regardless of your age or stage of life. The focus of this Webinar was on the dynamics associated with the non-financial side of retirement planning and living in retirement, with particular emphasis on the psychological impact of this transition.  The Webinar  not only included a presentation by Jeri Sedlar, but also highlighted some lessons-learned by a panel of UWRA retirees and some suggested resources to assist with the non-financial dimension of retirement planning.

UWRA Retirement Planning Webinar #5

Reorienting After Career

October 22nd, 2014

As the fifth installment in the UWRA Retirement Planning Webinar series, Reorienting After Career was an interactive learning session, focusing on ways to plan for life after career.  Supported in part by an IBM grant, participation was limited in order to facilitate group discussion.  The focus of this offering was on four important questions that those nearing retirement, and those who have recently retired, should ask themselves.  The co-hosts introduced each question with brief comments, a four person panel gave their viewpoints, and participants were then invited to share their perspectives.

UWRA Retirement Planning Webinar #6

Writing a Retirement Mission Statement and/or Mantra

This sixth installment introduced these two approaches to taking responsibility for shaping the purpose one would like to pursue during one's retirement years.  A panel of three United Way colleagues shared their own mission statement/mantra in a very effective and personal way - emphasizing that it takes considerable introspection and is an interative process that calls for one to revisit such statemesnts as life evolves.   A special template was developed to assist people in designing their own retirement mission statements and/or mantras.

Click here and read below to see Why this endeavor is important...

During these very challenging times, it has never been more important to plan ahead.
According to data compiled by the Federal Reserve and analyzed by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College for The Wall Street Journal (February 2011),  “The 401(k) generation is beginning to retire, and it isn't a pretty sight... The median household headed by a person aged 60 to 62 with a 401(k) account has less than one-quarter of what is needed in that account to maintain its standard of living in retirement.”  While saving for retirement for most is difficult because of all of the competing demands, giving retirement planning a low priority is a big mistake.
Other research shows that knowledge about retirement issues is positively related to one’s attitude toward retirement; and that programs designed to boost knowledge improve preparedness by triggering advance planning activities.
UWRA’s series of webinars on retirement planning is being developed to address several of the key issues of concern that have been identified through the Association’s continuing work in this area. Further Webinars will be planned as UWRA receives additional feedback as to what United Way staff and retirees consider to be most important.
