United Way Retirees Association (UWRA)

2008 Annual Report

Advancing the Common Good

(posted February 1, 2009)

Message to the UWRA Community

As the United Way system focuses on the building blocks of a better life - education, health and income - UWRA is contributing to moving this agenda forward.  Through capitalizing on the unique strengths and skills of our organization UWRA is helping to advance the common good in United Way communities nationwide.

UWRA’s mission and vision are probably more closely aligned with the United Way system than any other partner agency:

UWRA Mission:   To improve the quality of life of our members in retirement and to utilize the skills and talents of UW retirees to assist the United Way system in achieving its mission which is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities.

UWRA Vision:   UWRA will be the Association of choice by UW retirees and eligible UW employees; and as a valued provider of assistance to United Ways, their communities and other nonprofits.

As we all know to LIVE UNITED means working together to solve problems and bring about lasting change.  Now more than ever as a country, as communities, as individuals we are called to LIVE UNITED and GIVE, ADVOCATE, and VOLUNTEER for it is together that we can all accomplish more.

The United Way Retirees’ Association is making great strides advocating for current and retired staff and adding value to the United Way system thanks to the continued support (i.e., volunteer and fiscal) of the UW community, both past and present.  Please take a moment to review in the following annual report UWRA’s 2008 contributions and accomplishments – we could not do it without you!

Thank you for living united and helping us to advance the common good.

Henry J. Monaco                                 Patricia R. Smith

President, UWRA                               Executive Director, UWRA

UWRA – Advancing the Common Good

Advancing the Common Good is a framework geared to more efficiently and effectively meet each of the United Way system priorities in the areas of value, reputation, growth and operational effectiveness.

Below summarizes UWRA’s strategy to assist in Advancing the Common Good:

UWRA – Advancing the Common Good by adding value

Ţ     Add value to future & current UW retirees’ lives and the UW system by focusing on the dimensions of education, health, & income in the context of UWRA’s stated mission.

UWRA – Advancing the Common Good by enhancing United Way’s reputation by enabling people to make a difference

Ţ     Promoting and enhancing the UW reputation and reach primarily by: 1) providing opportunities for current and retired UW staff to engage, and 2) strengthening relationships with strategic partners to increase the organization’s effectiveness, relevance and impact.

UWRA – Advancing the Common Good by facilitating UW system growth

Ţ     Assist in the growth of the UW system, particularly increasing system revenue through working with individual UWs in developing or expanding their Endowment & Planned Giving programs.

UWRA – Advancing the Common Good by supporting operational effectiveness

Ţ     Assist in enhancing the UW system’s Operational Effectiveness particularly through contributing to leadership development, learning opportunities and envisioning global solutions.

UWRA embodies the LIVE UNITED message as we strive to engage the UWRA membership and the UW community as partners to give advocate and volunteer particularly on behalf of the issues that are important to retired UW staff. The following annual report provides a summary of our 2008 accomplishments in the context of the above strategies aimed at creating opportunities for a better life for all.

UWRA – Advancing the Common Good by adding value

Add value to future & current UW retirees’ lives and the UW system by focusing on the dimensions of education, health, & income in the context of UWRA’s stated mission.

Ways UWRA added value to the UW system in 2008:

§         Advocated for the importance of retirement planning and a better quality retirement for UW employees by working to develop an educational program for local United Ways to help guide employees into saving for their retirement.

§         Partnered in delivering services to the UW system in the areas of mentoring, endowment and planned giving, community impact, interim assistance, disaster support, retirement planning and preparation of UW learning and history materials.

My mentor made it clear that assisting me was his priority. That was HUGE -- especially since I came into the position after several directors had left. There were no former employees to turn to with questions… Without it, I probably would not have stayed in the position with UW. (Metro VII Executive Director)

As a new United Way Professional, the Mentoring Program was a great asset in learning how to navigate the United Way system. It also allowed me to provide strategic planning and implementation direction to the organization and Board of Directors. Because of the opportunity to be involved in the Mentoring Plus program, our organization was able to strengthen itself by developing and implementing a Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan.  (Metro VI Executive Director)

§         Continued to work on expanding cost cutting services beneficial to retirees: Insurance and discount programs, volunteer opportunities, camaraderie, etc. UWRA continues to explore possible affiliation with other organizations for the purpose of expanding the array of benefits currently available to UW retirees.  Current benefits include a free discount prescription drug card for member and spouse and access to insurance products at group rates including:

o        Dental Plan

o        Hearing Aid Benefit Discount Plan

o        Legal Plan

o        Long Term Care Insurance Plan

o        Medicare Supplement Plan

o        Vision Plan

§         Updated the UWRA Strategic plan to align the organization’s strategic direction with UW system priorities (Advancing the Common Good mission) and goals and establish clear and measurable ways to assess results and progress.

UWRA – Advancing the Common Good by enhancing United Way’s reputation by enabling people to make a difference

UWRA encourages UW retirees to stay involved and engages strategic partners to help develop and provide relevant services.   UW retirees built stronger communities through their UW careers – the United Way Retirees Association funnels their expertise and experience back into the system serving to increase the impact on fellow retirees, communities, and the profession.

Ways UWRA provided opportunities for current and retired UW staff to engage; strengthened relationships with relevant partners; and assisted other non-profits in 2008.

  • Provided a model and assistance to other organizations on using retired personnel for volunteering and interim positions (e.g., assisted proposal development to the America Chamber of Conference Executives regarding the use of Chamber Retirees for Interim CEO Roles; contributed to a research study by the Grantmakers for Effective Organizations: The Departing Exiting Nonprofit Leaders as Resources for Social Change.)

  • Forged a unique partnership of UW retirees, AARP, Community leaders, current UW HR staff, and UWA to begin to develop a program aimed at helping staff at all ages plan better for their retirement years.

  • Coordinated a variety of volunteer opportunities for United Way retirees leveraging their talent to promote and provide programs that strengthen United Way

  • Added 100 Members to the UWRA Listserv in 2008 for a total of 300 subscribers – enables quick communication of information, ideas, questions, and answers among UWRA members and provides a vehicle for UWRA, local UWs and UWA to post relevant information regarding volunteer opportunities, interim paid positions, Webinars, upcoming events, etc.

  • Provided access to United Way Online which is an important vehicle to keep abreast of happenings in the UW field.  UWRA membership is the only way former UW employees are granted access to United Way Online (pending approval by UWA).

  • Prepared the UWRA newsletter, UPDATES, which provides useful information to and about members and the UW field.  All UWRA members and all United Ways receive a copy (hardcopy and/or electronic version) and it is posted on Breakfast with UW Online and UWRA’s website www.UWRA.org.

  • Enhanced the UWRA’s Web site www.UWRA.org which provides a host of information ranging from organizational events to retirement planning information.

  • Provided an annual retreat opportunity open to all UWRA members and their significant others at cost at the Wildacres retreat center in Little Switzerland, North Carolina.  This carefully planned event is a mixture of learning, playing and bonding with friends/colleagues. Recent UWA and UWRA trends, issues and opportunities are discussed.

  • Participated in several national, state and regional conferences as both presenters and attendees helping to keep our organization current on the present state and vision of the United Way system and raise awareness of UWRA and the exciting work underway.

  • Expanded use of Webinar technology for educational and training events for the UWRA Board, members and the UW field.  In 2008 UWRA co-hosted an Endowment and Planned Giving Webinar, held its first Board web meeting, and is currently working on the use of Webinar technology for Retirement Planning.

Example - Planned Giving for Small City United Ways Webinar (replay link http://uwa.acrobat.com/p94116640/.  This Webinar was geared to United Ways interested in starting an EPG program and also for UWRA members interested in becoming EPG consultants). Sample of Evaluation coments:

What topics in this webinar were most helpful and what new ideas or skills did you learn from this webinar that you could apply to your job and/or community?

o        Using a UWRA Mentor could be extremely beneficial to our United Way.

o        EPG specifics, how planned giving works, helpful hints, actual experiences.

o        Barriers and steps were very helpful as well as links for EPG tool kit.

o        Learning about the Retirees consultant program

o        We had not planned on doing a donor survey but now we will.

o        Toolkit options and how to approach a potential giver.

o        I learned that there are simple, inexpensive ways to promote a planned giving program by printing on agenda's, letterhead, website, etc.

UWRA – Advancing the Common Good by facilitating UW system growth

Assist in the growth of the system, particularly increasing system revenue through working with individual UWs in developing or expanding their Endowment & Planned Giving programs.

Ways UWRA added additional system resources in 2008:

  • Added a million plus dollars to the United Way system after one pilot year of Endowment and Planned Giving (EPG) consulting by UWRA Volunteers, who provided materials, guidance, counsel and support to help start or strengthen local UW Endowment and Planned Giving programs.

I just wanted to pass along my and my board's appreciation for all the [EPG] guidance, examples and personal assistant given… The plan laid out, presentations, worksheets from UWRA and samples from Kankakee and Minnesota all worked terrifically…In addition, with a lot of help from Tom we essentially have our first brochure designed. Mentioning Tom, feedback from our board was great.  His unassuming but self-assured approach had a lot of credibility and went a long way to easing any fears our board had of moving forward with this endeavor.

Thanks again and we'll keep you informed of our progress.  By the way, two board members have already made planned giving decisions, putting us in their will!  (Metro VII Executive Director)

  • Added best practice information and learning around EPG generating additional working EPG programs in the system.  Worked closely with the UWA EPG department contributing to UW best practices around generating resources beyond the annual campaign.  The UWRA program not only assisted local United Ways jumpstart EPG programs but also resulted in learning/increased understanding of planned giving as well as additional revenue for the United Way system.

  • Expanded the UWRA Endowment Fund to 70 Founders/$275,000 helping to fund targeted programs that address UWRA priorities in ways not possible through annual revenue.

  • Provided through the UWRA Endowment the initial funding for the development of a UW system wide Retirement Planning program. The UWRA Board allocated additional monies through the Endowment to this program in 2009 and leverages Endowment proceeds with other organizations to expand and add additional expertise to the retirement planning effort.

  • Received increased support from local United Ways (up 7%) and UWRA leadership givers (up 6%) to continue and grow programs.

UWRA – Advancing the Common Good by supporting operational effectiveness

Assist in enhancing the UW system’s Operational Effectiveness particularly through contributing to leadership development throughout the system, learning opportunities, and envisioning global solutions.

§         Supported UW Leadership development - UWRA provided mentoring to five UW Executives/other staff in 2008 and over 75 UW staff since the program began in 2000.

I had a very large learning curve because unbeknown to me, United Way has a culture all its own that is very different from any nonprofit I have previously worked with…  I am fortunate enough to have discovered the mentor program offered by the United Way of America Retirees Association and it has been a true gift…  I can also state with confidence the gratitude the Board of Directors has for my mentor…  My mentor has supported me without bias, has given me strong and useful advice, and she has helped me build my self confidence in the United Way system.  I am grateful.  (Metro IV Executive Director)

§         Contributed to UW learning through variety of programs such as our EPG work – for example UWRA’s thorough EPG process and all the materials provided - in addition to jumpstarting the local UW Planned Giving program - takes the Executive Director, Ad-Hoc Committee, Board, Volunteers, Staff, etc through a learning progression to understand the dynamics of the planned giving process and help them build a community tailored case. This customized on-site training provides a learning/development opportunity which builds skills, knowledge and capability directly related to system building and operational efficiency and effectiveness and hence increases resources for community impact.

The (EPG) Mentor helped to better explain the importance of implementing a planned giving and endowment program.  I have found that the phone calls and emails with my mentor assisted and guided me in my efforts towards implementing the program.  (Metro VII Executive Director)

§         Increased organizational effectiveness through technological solutions permitting a re-allocation of time/cost savings to mission centered work – implemented multiple listservs to expedite the relay and exchange of information and at the same time go green; and worked with Truist to develop a donor giving website that makes it easy to join UWRA as well as contribute annual dues, leadership and Endowment gifts.

§         Provided an extra set of experienced hands to create needed learning materials (e.g., Quickstart Guide for New UW Executives, Mentoring Guidelines, EPG Guides, Grassroots Initiatives Shape an International Movement, Exectuive Summary of UW history, UW history banner & poster, UWI history, It’s Never Too Early or Too Late to Plan for your Retirement, & Choosing a Financial Advisor).

“As I rarely endorse books (who am I anyway?),I hope you will consider reading this one, and, if you find that it helps to kindle the fire in your heart for United Way’s mission, and if you discover that it gives you tools to achieve that mission, then by all means recommend to your friends and colleagues.” (Metro IV Executive)

  • Partnered with UWA on evaluating/developing a stronger Mentoring component of LEAD.  Leaders Engaged in Accelerated Development (LEAD) is an online portal that provides tools and resources to support the development of high potential talent as a strategic asset within the United Way system.  UWRA is involved in reviewing mentoring software with international capability to enhance a mentoring culture within the UW system.

Giving to the United Way Retirees Association is a wonderful example of System Citizenship.  UWRA may or may not be directly helping your UW this year or next but we will be assisting local United Ways throughout the system as well as assisting the people who helped make the system what it is today.

Together, we can make communities a better place for people to live and work.

Thank you all for your support!

UWRA would also like to thank our Sponsors United Way of America and Mutual of America for their past and current support. Both organizations provide annual grants to UWRA and without this support our capacity to provide programs of benefit to our members and the United Way system would be diminished. In addition to providing a grant which is integral in helping us fund our programs, United Way of America provides in-kind services and support.  We look forward to continuing partnership opportunities as we seek to fulfill our mission by assisting current and former UW staff and UWs around the country.

UWRA would also like to extend our thanks to the United Way of Greater Rochester for sponsoring the 2008 UWRA membership dues for their 32 retired staff.
